"Designed for High Speed Milling'
More and more shops are adapting to hard milling technology to improve their productivity and ultimately reduce the lead time that it takes to produce complex dies, molds and parts used in the electronic, fiber optics, biotechnology and medical industries. Sodick high-speed machining centers are built from the ground up to attack the toughest machining challenges. Designed for the purpose of milling hardened tool steels with complex geometries to near net shape, the Sodick HS series can handle any task.

Sodick High Speed Mills offer several advantages over traditional milling. With HSM, there are no heavy loads applied to the cutting edge and the high cutting feed rate enables the use of small diameter tooling with great ease. This results in shorter machining times and higher quality surface finishes. Sodick HSM's can machine hard materials up to 70HRC, copper, aluminum, titanium, silicon, PEEK polymers, inconel and ceramics. They are designed and built for high speed machining.
CastingsSodick’s HSM use high quality FC300 & FC500 sperodial castings. This material is known for its strength and its ability to resist temperature changes and provide excellent shock and vibration dampening characteristics. The castings have uniform soundness and fine dense grain structure resulting in machine rigidity. Sodick pours, machines and hands scraps their own castings to ensure a perfect mating surface. The bridge style construction eliminates the X-axis overhang commonly associated with C-frame constructionLinear Motor Axis Drives Glass Scales + Linear Roller BearingsSodick’s high speed mills use linear motor designed axis drives. Linear motors have no moving parts (ball screws, ball nuts, rotary motor). Therefore there's no ball screw to heat up and expand and no backlash in the system. Linear motors are anon-contact system, provide high acceleration (1.2G) and high axis speed (1,440”/min.). Unlike ball screw drives, linear motors eliminate backlash, are vibration-free and will last forever. Since high speed mills take shallow cuts, it is a perfect fit for linear motor drives. All axis drives are coupled with 7 nanometer glass scale feedback which ensures cutting accuracy and repeatability. High quality THK linear roller bearings guide ways are used and provide a high radial load capacity and vibration and shock resistance. Linear roller bearings provide ultra-high dampening and rigidity due to more surface contact and increased accuracy over the ball bearing type.40,000 rpm spindle

Sodick’s 40,000 rpm oil-air lubricated spindle is designed to run at an high rpm while maintaining stiffness without over heating. The shrink-fit tool holders (HSK-E32) are heated until it expands enough for the tool to slide into the holder spindle. Upon cooling, the holder contracts around the tool. This method provides the most accurate fit for mills with spindles above 30,000 rpm. Air is used to blow the chips away from the cutting area and an oil mist is used to lubricate the cutting tool.
K-SMC Motion Controller: The Sodick developed motion controller controls the machine’s heartbeat. It is responsible for the motion of the machine. Sodick’s K-SMC motion controller maximizes the speed and acceleration of the linear motor axes drives resulting in improved table positioning accuracy and reduced axes delays.Control Technology Sodick’s LN2X CNC control has a large 15” touch screen LCD display. The 1,000 block look ahead feature ensures that the received data will be handled quickly and efficiently. Programs can be transferred via USB port or a high speed 3mb/sec Ethernet connection. This Windows XP based control uses ISO G code format has plenty of memory including a 30G hard drive 30MB of RAM.
